Best Dog Ramp for Cars and SUVs: Length and Incline First
In this guide
The right dog ramp for your car is the one long enough to make a gentle slope from the ground to your cargo floor, wide enough that your dog does not feel it is walking a plank, and rated comfortably above your dog’s weight. Everything else is a convenience. This is a spec-based guide: the picks below come from manufacturer pages and Amazon listings checked on 2026-10-28, not from hands-on testing.

Short answer: for most SUVs, minivans and trucks with a large or senior dog, a ramp of 70 in or longer and about 20 in wide is the safe default, such as the PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping ramp (47 to 87 in). For a low hatchback or sedan and a light, agile dog, a 62 in folding ramp is enough and much easier to carry.
Start with your vehicle’s height, not the ramp
A ramp’s angle depends on two numbers: the rise (how high the top end sits) and the ramp’s length. Measure the rise with a tape from level ground to the surface the ramp’s top lip will rest on. For an SUV with the tailgate open, that is usually the cargo floor or the bumper step. For a pickup, it is the tailgate.
Do not guess from the vehicle class. Cargo heights vary by model, tire size and suspension, and a lifted truck can be several inches taller than the brochure. Measure, write it down, and then use the table below. The step-by-step measuring guide covers awkward cases like bumper steps and rear doors.
| Rise you measured | Length for about 20° | Length for about 22° | Length for about 25° |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 in (low hatchback) | 58 in | 53 in | 47 in |
| 24 in | 70 in | 64 in | 57 in |
| 28 in (typical SUV range) | 82 in | 75 in | 66 in |
| 30 in | 88 in | 80 in | 71 in |
| 34 in (tall truck tailgate) | 99 in | 91 in | 80 in |
The lengths are straight trigonometry (length = rise divided by the sine of the angle), rounded. They assume the full ramp length is on the slope; if the top few inches overlap the cargo floor, you lose that much working length. The full method, including a chart for beds and couches, is in how long a dog ramp should be.
What angle is “gentle”?
No veterinary body publishes a maximum angle for dog ramps. Manufacturer and retailer copy commonly points to roughly 18 to 25 degrees, and ZENTAVO, for example, describes 18 to 26 degrees for entry heights of 23 to 33 in on its 75 in ramp. For comparison, the ADA limit for wheelchair ramps is 1:12, about 4.8 degrees (U.S. Access Board guide to ramps), so even a “gentle” dog ramp is steep by human standards. A practical rule: the older, heavier, stiffer or more nervous the dog, the closer to 20 degrees you want to be. If your dog has arthritis or a back condition, ask your vet what they would accept.
Width, surface and weight rating
Width. The American Kennel Club warns that a surface that is too narrow can make a dog lose confidence and risk falling off the side (AKC on dog stairs and ramps). Car ramps in this guide range from 16 to 20 in. Big, long-striding or wobbly dogs do better on 20 in.
Surface. Look for a high-traction tread that stays grippy when wet: rubberized, artificial turf, coarse carpet, EVA foam or mesh with felt. A slick ramp defeats the purpose. The traction surfaces guide compares them.
Weight rating. Choose a rating well above your dog’s weight. Dogs do not walk a ramp gently; they bound, stop, turn and sometimes double up. A printed rating is the maker’s claim, not an independent certification. Even rated equipment ramps get recalled: in July 2025 the CPSC announced a recall of about 18,000 aluminum loading ramps that could bend or break below their stated limits (CPSC recall notice). That was not a pet product, but the lesson carries over: buy margin. More in dog ramp weight limits.

Spec-based picks
Best for tall SUVs, trucks and big dogs: PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping
The PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping Dog Ramp on Amazon extends from 47 to 87 in, is 20 in wide, weighs 18 lb and is rated for dogs up to 300 lb, per the listing and PetSafe’s product page. At full length on a 30 in cargo floor that works out to roughly 20 degrees, which is about as gentle as any portable car ramp gets. It has side rails, rubber feet and a latch that locks it closed.
Who it is not for: owners of small cars. Collapsed, it is still 47 in long, and a fully extended 87 in ramp needs clear space behind the vehicle. It was previously sold under the Solvit brand, so older reviews and manuals may use that name.
Heavy-duty folding option: ZENTAVO 75 in car ramp
The ZENTAVO 75 in x 20 in Dog Ramp for Car on Amazon uses a steel-and-wood frame with six crossbars, auto-locking hinges, an EVA mat surface and a safety tether, per the listing. It weighs 23.8 lb and folds to about 37.5 x 20 x 3.5 in. The listing’s bullets claim a 500 lb capacity but its description says 300 lb; plan around the lower number until the seller clarifies. Either figure covers any dog.
Who it is not for: anyone lifting it into a high cargo area often, or a rise above about 30 in, where 75 in starts getting steep (about 24 degrees at 30 in).
Telescoping alternative: PETIMBER 73 in
The PETIMBER 73 in Telescoping Dog Ramp on Amazon extends from 19 to 73 in with an aluminum frame, a mesh-and-felt walking surface, two locking latches and reflective edge lines; the listing rates it to 250 lb and notes that some flex in the aluminum is normal. The short collapsed length is the draw if you also want to use it on a couch or porch step. Width is not stated in the listing we checked, so confirm it on the page.
Lightweight folding ramps around 71 in: PetRuna and PetThem
The PetRuna 71 in Dog Ramp on Amazon and the PetThem 71 in Dog Ramp on Amazon share a format: 71 x 17.2 in aluminum ramps with a carpet-style tread that fold four times into a roughly 19 x 17 in package. PetRuna lists 16 lb and a 270 lb rating; PetThem lists 19 lb and 250 lb. They suit a hatchback or crossover and medium dogs; at 17.2 in wide they are narrower than the 20 in models, which matters for a very large or unsteady dog.
Gen7Pets Natural Step 72
The Gen7Pets Natural Step 72 in Ramp on Amazon has a 16 in wide poly-grass tread, rubber grippers at both ends and a safety tether latch, and holds up to 250 lb per the listing. It folds to 36 x 16 x 3 in. The artificial-turf surface is the reason to choose it; the 16 in width is the reason a giant breed might not.
Best wide ramp at a shorter length: Pawaboo 67 in
The Pawaboo 67 in x 20 in Dog Ramp for Car on Amazon is the wide option for lower vehicles. It has an all-metal frame, a PVC-padded surface, a strap and buckle that clip to the trunk latch, and a 200 lb rating, and it tri-folds to 20 x 18 x 6 in. At 67 in it suits rises up to about 24 in at a gentle angle; on a 30 in SUV floor it sits near 27 degrees.
Best for low cars and light dogs: PetSafe Happy Ride Folding
The PetSafe Happy Ride Folding Dog Ramp on Amazon is 62 x 16 in, weighs 10 lb and is rated to 150 lb, per the listing. It is the easiest ramp here to carry and store. At 62 in it is only gentle for low openings: about 19 degrees at 20 in, but about 23 degrees at 24 in and steeper above that. Pick it for a sedan back seat or a low hatch, not a tall SUV with a stiff senior dog.
How to set up a car ramp safely
- Park on level ground and open the tailgate fully. A slope behind the car changes the angle.
- Seat the top lip fully on the cargo floor or bumper, then clip any tether or strap. A ramp that slides sideways is the most common way dogs get spooked.
- Check the foot is on firm ground, not gravel edges or wet grass.
- Walk the dog on a leash alongside the ramp, at the dog’s pace, and stay beside it on the open side.
- Do the descent too. Coming down is harder on joints and confidence than going up, and that is when many dogs try to jump off.
VCA notes that most dogs can learn to use a vehicle ramp and that it can reduce stress on the back and leg joints (VCA Hospitals on osteoarthritis). Training takes patience; how to train a dog to use a ramp has a step-by-step plan.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying by vehicle type instead of measuring. “SUV ramp” means nothing without your rise.
- Choosing the shortest ramp because it stores well. A short ramp on a tall car is steep, and a steep ramp is the reason many dogs refuse.
- Ignoring width for a big dog. A 16 in tread can be fine for a Lab and too narrow for a wobbly Great Dane.
- Skipping the tether. Most of these ramps ship with a strap or tether; use it.
- Letting a dog with a back problem jump out “just this once.” Veterinary neurology guidance after an IVDD diagnosis is to avoid jumping into or out of cars at all (VNIOC). See ramps for senior dogs and ramps for dachshunds with IVDD.
Which one to buy
- Tall SUV, minivan or truck, big or senior dog: PetSafe Happy Ride Extra Long (up to 87 in), or the ZENTAVO 75 in if you want a rigid folding frame.
- Crossover or hatchback, medium dog: PetRuna or PetThem 71 in, or Gen7Pets 72 in for an artificial-turf tread.
- Low vehicle, big dog that wants room: Pawaboo 67 x 20 in.
- Low car, small or light dog, storage matters most: PetSafe Happy Ride Folding 62 in.
If you are torn between a telescoping and a folding ramp, folding vs telescoping dog ramps walks through storage and setup differences, and the SUV ramp guide goes deeper on tall vehicles.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a dog ramp for an SUV be?
Measure from the ground to the spot where the ramp's top end will rest, usually the cargo floor or bumper. For a 30 in rise, a 72 in ramp sits at about 25 degrees and an 87 in ramp at about 20 degrees. Most SUVs need a ramp of 70 in or longer for a dog that is old, stiff or nervous.
Is a telescoping or folding ramp better for a car?
Telescoping ramps adjust their length, so one ramp can serve a low hatchback and a tall truck, and they usually store as a long narrow slab. Folding ramps are fixed length and fold into a squarer package that fits a cargo area. Pick by the length you need first, then by how it stores.
How wide should a car ramp be for a large dog?
Wider is easier. AKC warns that a ramp that is too narrow can cost a dog confidence and risk a fall off the side. Most car ramps are 16 to 20 in wide; large or unsteady dogs are better served by the 20 in models.
What weight rating do I need?
Pick a ramp rated well above your dog's weight, since dogs bounce, scramble and sometimes share a ramp. A 150 lb rating is plenty for a 60 lb dog; a 120 lb mastiff belongs on a 250 to 300 lb ramp. Treat any printed rating as the maker's claim and follow the manual.
Will my dog use a car ramp straight away?
Many will not. AKC recommends short sessions, letting the dog sniff the ramp, starting at a low angle and rewarding each step, and never pulling or pushing a hesitant dog. Practicing with the ramp flat on the ground first is a common way to begin.
