Best Dog Ramp for Bed: Heights, Surfaces and Senior Dogs
In this guide
The best dog ramp for a bed is one whose sloped section is long enough for your mattress height, with a grippy surface, a flat landing at the top and, for older dogs, side rails that stop shortcut jumps. Measure the height of your mattress top first; most mistakes come from buying a ramp that is too short for the bed. This guide is spec-based, built from manufacturer pages and Amazon listings checked on 2026-10-28; we have not tested these ramps.

Short answer: for a standard-height bed around 25 in, a long wooden ramp with a platform and rails, such as the KUVETO 74 in, or the PetSafe CozyUp (70 in, rated 120 lb), covers most dogs. If your bed height is unusual or might change, an adjustable model such as the ZENTAVO 65 in (13 to 32.1 in) is the safer buy.
Measure your bed, then pick a slope length
Measure straight up from the floor to the top of the mattress where your dog steps off. Bed heights vary widely with frames, box springs and pillow tops, so do not rely on “standard” figures.
| Mattress-top height | Slope length for about 20° | For about 22° | For about 25° | Floor space needed at 20° |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 in | 53 in | 48 in | 43 in | about 50 in |
| 20 in | 58 in | 53 in | 47 in | about 55 in |
| 22 in | 64 in | 59 in | 52 in | about 60 in |
| 25 in | 73 in | 67 in | 59 in | about 69 in |
| 28 in | 82 in | 75 in | 66 in | about 77 in |
| 30 in | 88 in | 80 in | 71 in | about 82 in |
The figures are trigonometry, rounded. Floor space is the distance from the bed edge to the ramp’s foot. If that space runs into a wall or a doorway, either run the ramp along the side of the bed or consider stairs; dog ramp vs stairs covers the trade-off. For the full method, see how long a dog ramp should be.
What matters on a bed ramp
Slope length, not overall length. Several bed ramps include a flat top platform in their listed length. The KUVETO 74 in, for example, lists a 61 in ramp section. Use the slope length in the table above.
A landing platform. The last step from ramp to mattress is where dogs twist or scramble. A flat platform level with the mattress lets them pause and step across.
Side rails. The American Kennel Club recommends placing a ramp where a barrier on at least one side guides the dog and prevents early leaping or falling (AKC on dog stairs and ramps). Rails do that on both sides. They matter most for seniors, dogs with poor vision, and dogs that try to jump off halfway down.
Grip, top and bottom. Carpet, carpet with raised cleats, and EVA foam are the common surfaces. The ramp’s feet matter as much as the tread: rubber feet or straps to the bed frame stop it sliding on hardwood. Canine Arthritis Management recommends anti-slip mats and tape wherever an arthritic dog puts its feet (CAM home adaptations). See dog ramp traction surfaces.
Width. 16 in is typical for bed ramps; wider feels safer for a large dog.
Rating and build. Wood ramps are heavier but rigid. Folding ramps store under the bed but have hinges that can flex. Choose a rating well above your dog’s weight.

Spec-based picks
Standard 25 in bed, most dogs: PetSafe CozyUp Bed Ramp
The PetSafe CozyUp Bed Ramp (model 62399) measures 70 x 16 x 25 in, has a carpet cover over a wood frame and is rated for pets up to 120 lb, per PetSafe’s product page. If the full 70 in is slope, that is about 21 degrees at 25 in, close to the target. It comes in cherry or white.
Who it is not for: dogs over about 100 lb (leave margin under the 120 lb rating), beds much taller than 25 in, and dogs that need rails. Some retailer reviewers describe the carpet as slippery for elderly dogs; we could not verify that, but adding a non-slip runner is cheap insurance. We could not confirm its Amazon listing, so check PetSafe’s site or your usual retailer.
Senior dogs and rails: KUVETO 74 in Wooden Bed Ramp
The KUVETO 74 in Wooden Dog Ramp for Bed on Amazon is the most enclosed design here. Per the listing it is 74 x 16 x 25 in, with a 61 in ramp section, a wide top platform, four removable rails (two along the ramp, two at the top), carpet with eight traction strips, wheels for moving it, and a 200 lb rating. A 60 in version (KUVETO 60 in on Amazon) suits smaller rooms.
One flag: the title says 20 degrees, but 25 in of rise over a 61 in ramp section works out to about 24 degrees. It may be measured differently, but plan for the steeper figure if your dog is very stiff. Who it is not for: beds well above 25 in, and small rooms, since it takes about 6 ft of floor.
Unusual or changing bed heights: ZENTAVO 65 in Adjustable
The ZENTAVO 65 in Foldable Adjustable Dog Ramp on Amazon adjusts across six levels from 13 to 32.1 in, though the listing says it suits beds 14 to 28 in. It is 17.7 in wide, with an EVA surface, three removable side panels, anchor straps to the bed frame, glow strips for night use, a top rest platform and a 200 lb rating, and it folds flat. The seller recommends leaving at least 23.6 in of space beside the bed.
At 65 in, it is about 20 degrees at 22 in but about 26 degrees at 28 in, so it is gentlest on beds in the low 20s. Who it is not for: tall beds near its top setting with a senior dog.
Simple and washable: Pet Gear Free Standing Ramp
The Pet Gear Free Standing Pet Ramp on Amazon is 56 x 16 x 23 in, with a removable, machine-washable carpet tread, rubber grippers, a 5 in first step from the floor and a 200 lb rating, per the listing. It snaps together without tools. At 56 in it is on the steep side for a 23 in bed (around 24 degrees), so it suits sound adult dogs and couches better than frail seniors.
Large dogs and a furniture look: KUVETO XXL Ramp Bench
The KUVETO XXL 2-in-1 Dog Ramp and Bed Bench on Amazon is a faux-leather bench with a 20.5 in platform, a listed 22 degree carpeted ramp with traction strips, a landing platform, a solid wood frame rated to 400 lb and 42 L of storage, per the listing. It suits big dogs and lower beds near 20 in. Length and width are not stated in the listing we checked, so confirm the footprint.
Low beds and couches, small dogs: Pawaboo Adjustable Ramp
The Pawaboo adjustable small dog ramp on Amazon is a light wooden ramp about 32 in long with heights from 9.8 to 20.5 in. It folds small. The catch is length: at 9.8 in it is about 18 degrees, but at 20.5 in it is about 40 degrees. Use it on the lower settings for a small, healthy dog and a low couch or daybed, not as a senior dog’s bed ramp. The couch ramp guide covers that use.
Setting up a bed ramp
- Put the ramp where the dog already tries to jump on, so it fits their habit.
- Seat the top flush with the mattress; a gap or lip is a trip point.
- Strap it to the frame if it has straps, and put a non-slip rug under the foot on hard floors.
- Light the route. Glow strips or a nightlight help older dogs at night.
- Block the old jump spot with pillows for a few weeks while the dog learns.
After an IVDD diagnosis, veterinary neurology guidance is to stop jumping on and off furniture and to put stairs or a ramp by the bed (VNIOC). Dachshund Health UK notes that jumping down is especially hard on the spine (Dachshund Health UK). If your dog has a diagnosed condition, follow your vet’s advice on whether the bed is a good idea at all. More in ramps for dachshunds with IVDD and ramps for senior dogs.
Mistakes to avoid
- Measuring to the bed frame. Measure to the top of the mattress.
- Trusting overall length. Find the slope length.
- No room for the foot. A 25 in bed at 20 degrees needs almost 6 ft of floor.
- Slippery feet on wood. Strap it or rug it.
- Skipping training. Lure, reward, go slowly; how to train a dog to use a ramp has the steps.
Which one to buy
- Standard 25 in bed, dog under about 100 lb: PetSafe CozyUp.
- Senior or unsteady dog, room to spare: KUVETO 74 in with rails.
- Bed between about 18 and 26 in, or height might change: ZENTAVO 65 in adjustable.
- Large dog, bed near 20 in, want furniture: KUVETO XXL ramp bench.
- Small healthy dog, low bed: Pawaboo on a low setting, or see dog stairs for high beds if floor space is tight.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a dog ramp for a bed be?
About 2.9 times the height of the mattress top for a 20 degree slope. A 22 in bed needs about 64 in of slope and a 25 in bed about 73 in. Check the slope length, not the overall length, because many bed ramps include a flat platform at the top.
Are side rails worth it on a bed ramp?
For seniors, unsteady dogs and dogs that like to hop off halfway, yes. AKC suggests placing ramps where a barrier on at least one side guides the dog. Rails do that on both sides and discourage shortcut jumps; they also make the ramp taller and bulkier.
Is a ramp or stairs better for getting on the bed?
Ramps suit arthritic, long-backed, post-surgical and nervous dogs because there is no step-up. Stairs take less floor space and suit agile small dogs. If floor space in front of the bed is tight, stairs may be the only option that fits.
Will a bed ramp work on a slippery floor?
Only if its feet grip. Look for rubber feet or anchor straps that attach to the bed frame, and put a non-slip rug under the foot on wood or tile. Canine Arthritis Management also recommends covering slippery floors along the dog's route.
What weight rating does a bed ramp need?
Comfortably above your dog's weight. The bed ramps in this guide list ratings from 120 lb to 400 lb. A printed rating is the maker's claim; follow the manual's setup instructions so the ramp is loaded the way it was rated.
